Why I Only Applied To Morgan State University

Why I Only Applied To Morgan State University

Education
It's day 12 of Blogtober and it's homecoming day at thee Morgan State University. Let me share the story of how and why I applied to Morgan State. Growing up, I didn’t overthink about college unless I was watching one of my favorite shows to date, A Different World. Let me tell you there is power in watching positive images of people that look like you in television and media. (Another post for another day.) All I knew is I was going to college like Whitley, Freddie, Dwayne, and ‘em. Then Lena (Jada Pickett), a street smart tough girl from Baltimore, joined the cast in its fifth season and if I wasn’t sold before I was then. During that time, a couple of my older cousins were also going to…

Education, Inspiration
Happy National Teacher’s Day! Being in the classroom for the last eleven years, I have gained millions of stories, trials, tribulations, and OMG stories that I can tell you right now! But, that’s not what this post is about. Instead, I want to tell you about some fantastic former Baltimore City Public School teachers who developed and nurtured my love for reading and writing. It all began at Mary E. Rodman Elementary School #204. I was in second or third grade, Ms. Gilmore’s class to be exact when I discovered my love for creative writing. Back then it felt like we were writing a new story every day, the whole time I think it was because we had finished all our other work. I enjoyed writing and creating all types…

Reading &Writing

Education, Writing Tips & Info
But why is it so important?Like I tell my students, no matter what you want to do with your life, whatever path you take, no matter the career field-you will need to be able to read and write. The study of Language Arts is the basis for learning and understanding all other topics. Reading and writing go hand and hand. Let's face it; it's 2019 no one talks on the phone anymore. Most communication is via text through your phone, some app, or your email. It's important to be able to read and understand and communicate in writing and to make sure that communication is clear. So read often. Write often. Expand your knowledge. Reading and writing will only grow your mind and lead you to higher heights.   Make…

IMMEDIATE & EFFECTIVE WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS

IMMEDIATE & EFFECTIVE WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Education
A few weeks ago Baltimore City Public Schools were in the news, I mean ALL over the news, for lack of heat and building maintenance in general. Everyone (on my timeline at least) had an opinion one way or another. As many of my readers know I have been a teacher with Baltimore City Schools for the past ten years and  I’m not even going to get into my opinion on the state of public schools, lack of funds, and support from all angles (I’ll definitely get into that later.) ANYHOO…  the news sparked an outcry for help. Go Fund Me accounts were created, free meals were given out and people vowed to do more for city schools. I know people mean well and I hope in days, weeks, months,…
